This autumn I wanted to evoke a different side of India. We are all beguiled by the jewel colours of India – from the spices to the saris in rich emeralds, pinks and oranges. But for our sleepwear collection this season I wanted to capture the quieter, more nuanced, washed pigments of India’s palaces, temples and forts – the inner private chambers and quiet sanctums of some of the countries most sacred places… meet the ‘Zenana Collection’, named after the most secluded inner courtyard of the Amer Fort – a series of living spaces where the royal women lived, relaxed and slept, away from public gaze. Evoking the feminine lilacs and pale pastel blues of our new prints, designed to rest, sleep and dream.
Whilst most palaces had their public spaces where wealth and importance were shown through elaborate scale, artworks and adornment – it is always the private domains that I am drawn to – the simpler, more human proportions and decorations that were designed for rest and tranquillity.
The calming palette of the Amer Fort's inner courtyards (above) is created with beautiful hand-painted botanicals, murals and borders that decorate the walls, using crushed botanicals – echoing the inks used in our hand-block prints, derived from natural sources and with the same dreamy, sun-washed quality to them as these ancient artworks.
For the first time, we have created a short pj set, with a button-through, short-sleeve shirt and shorts with piping detail. Inspired by my own pre-teen daughter, I wanted to create a set that would appeal to younger girls, nieces, god-daughters and friends. This new style comes in our new print for this season, a hand-block printed lilac stripe (above); it is deliciously wobbly and celebrates the 'perfectly imperfect' skills of our artisans - making each set utterly unique. This new style is also available in our best-selling ikat print, in this season's washed blue - inspired by the powder blue walls of Puskar.
Another new addition to our expanding sleepwear range is our girlfriend shirt, in our new neela lilac floral boothi print. The new shape is longer and boxier, with a dipped hem and more structured cuffs. It's a great present for nursing mamas for hospital bags, or for hibernating over the winter months. I'm so proud of this new addition, I spend so long thinking and talking to customers about fit and comfort and making pieces that feel effortless to wear and this is better than I could have imagined.
For our sleepwear fans, the best-selling long-sleeve pyjamas are back but in brand-new prints - a smart blue, hand-block printed stripe and dreamy, lilac ikat, too. The perfect set for gifting, the 100% cotton voile is buttery soft and comfy - great for Christmas Day morning. We offer gift wrapping in our 'tree-free' hand-block print wrapping paper, created for us from the remnants of the fashion industry - all wrapped and ready for you to place under the tree.
Our rani print is back too in a washed sky blue for autumn; I love the intricacy of this feminine, scrolling pattern work - available as both a kimono or pj trousers. Pair with a simple white vest for a great yoga outfit, or the ultimate loungewear.
