This spring we are launching our latest womenswear range - the Mithai Collection of boho print dresses - in this week's journal post I wanted to share the story of the sweet treat that inspired the colour palette for our latest designs...
Last February I was in Jaipur on a design visit and over lunch with one of our artisans, the conversation turned to the universal topic of food - we discussed our favourite dishes and I was tipped off to an amazing Jaipuri sweet purveyor that I should definitely check out to satisfy my sweet tooth...
The next day, with a hastily written address in hand I tracked down the 'best Mithai in town', walking in to be greeted with row upon row of beautifully fragrant delicacies. Think Italian sugared almonds, Turkish Delights... Mithai are the Indian equivalent, traditionally given as gifts to mark happy occasions, such as weddings or a birth – considered ‘pure’ in Hindu culture, they are also often taken as gifts to temple, as offerings to gods.
Delicated perfumed rosewater confections, pistachio green clusters - all adorned with gold leaf... it was a feast for the eyes and the palette. Clutching my beautifully wrapped box of Mithai, a seed had been sown and over the coming months I was drawn again and again to the sugary palette of rosewater, pistachio, fresh mint and those gold leaf flourishes.
Soon swatches from our hand-block printers in these edible shades were coming thick and fast as the collection began to form, always being drawn back to that green and pink combo that once I started looking for, I found everywhere in India - from the simplest doorway, to the pastel confection of the Patrika Gate in Jaipur...
And I can finally share with you, almost a year to the day in the making, the Mithai Collection of hand-block print boho dresses that launched this week - with brand-new shapes for 2020 in our maxi, midi and tunic dress range, all inspired by the blousy, romantic shapes of 70s boho luxe, with statement sleeves, tiered hems and hand-tied tassels. We've given them monikers, named after some of our favourite 70s boho icons - from the 'Ali' (Ali McGraw) to the 'Farah' (Fawcett). All created using 100% organic cotton by our artisans in Jaipur in limited collections. They are a culmination of all the love I have for the vintage, boho aesthetic in our new delicious Mithai palette -
Meet the Farah dresses
The Farah dress is a spring favourite, we've included so many intricated panels, prints and borders in her design, with an on-trend, romantic voluminous sleeve that finishes with a bracelet length cuff. The easy-on style has a v-neck, tassel-close front and is a versatile midi length.
Meet the Ali dresses
The Ali dresses in fresh mint and rosewater, shot through with silver lurex are so delicious, they are almost good enough to eat. With a statement ruffled hem, blouson sleeves and finished with traditional gold ghungroo bell tassels, they are feminine and feel so joyously spring-like - the archive vintage hand-block print is overlaid on soft grey, organic cotton.
