Our hand-block printed, cotton quilts are fast becoming the signature of Dilli Grey. Over time they have come to epitomize all that I want Dilli Grey to stand for – ethically produced, ‘slow-fashion’, heirloom pieces that have been made with love and designed to last.
The quilt collection has grown slowly since we launched in 2015 and based on customer feedback we now offer a wider range of sizes, from the smallest baby quilt – perfect for cots and playmats – all the way up to king-size bedspreads. I love that I can respond and grow the business organically like this; hand-crafting products that Dilli Grey customers are asking for. That’s what an independent business should be! Responsive and collaborative with its clients to create something really special.
Each season I travel to India and design and source new colourways and prints for our quilts with our Jaipur artisans – taking inspiration from my visits to the region and its rich textile history.
For those who haven’t bought our quilts yet, here’s a bit of a low-down on their fabulousness (and practicality!):
- Firstly, with my mum-hat on, all our quilts are machine-washable at 30 degrees. I didn’t want to create quilts that people had to be ‘precious’ about. My children have used theirs to make dens, as playmats, for picnics in the park, to snuggle under on the sofa when they’re poorly… In fact, the more they’re washed, the softer and ‘well-worn’ they become.
- They are 100% organic cotton. The cotton voile is hand-block printed, then hand-stitched together with a natural, cotton filler. This means they are great for babies and children as they are breathable, great for sensitive skins or allergy-sufferers and free from synthetic materials. We also use azo-free dyes so they are gentle on the environment, and the skin.
- The quilts have become a popular gifting item with customers – the mini quilts for new arrivals and the larger bed quilts for weddings. You can really see the quality and love that has been hand-stitched into them. A group of women in a village outside Jaipur do all the hand-quilting for us and the time and effort involved in creating these heirloom pieces really shows.
- To increase the flexibility and longevity of the quilts, we make them all fully reversible, so if you want to change the feel of your bedroom, or get tired of one print, you have another ‘look’ to try.
