Design stories: The story begins with colour

The Story Begins With Colour (As It Always Does)

There’s something I’ve noticed recently — when I share more of the story behind our designs, you respond in the most beautiful way.

So I wanted to bring you into this one from the very beginning.

Because every Dilli Grey collection always starts in the same place…
India, Colour and a feeling.

My last story was all about vibrant yellows and bright pinks - full of energy, optimism, and that unmistakable joy you find everywhere in India.

But this time, I felt pulled somewhere quieter.

This collection is rooted in those calmer moments, the ones I find when I’m away from home, immersed in design, where everything slows down just enough for new ideas to surface.

Think softer tones.
More grounded colours.
A sense of ease.

At the printing table in Jaipur

Some of my favourite days are spent at the printing table with our colour master and print master, Bagwan Ji.

This is where the magic really happens. Armed with my very basic Hindi, I start picking and choosing colours — adjusting tones, shifting combinations, trying things out. And even though we don’t fully speak the same language, it never really matters.

Because there’s a universal language that takes over - Delight!!! That moment when a colour lands just right or when a border placement suddenly works. When everything comes together in a way you can feel before you can even explain it - synergy…

(There’s usually a slightly embarrassing squeal of joy from me at this point.)

Building the Story

Back in the studio, the process becomes slower, more considered.

I have a huge archive of swatches — prints and colours collected over time — and I start to build little vignettes.

Grouping. Layering. Editing, going backwards and forwards with our team in India, do we like it? What trims, which style… Months of consideration for each piece.

It’s about finding that balance — the right mix of print, colour, and space.

A familiar favourite reimagined

Jackie midi dress in white and sage - Dilli Grey Mogra Smocked Nightie in White and Sage - Dilli Grey

I knew quite early on that I wanted to revisit one of your favourites the Jackie Dress.

It’s one of those styles that comes back season after season because you love it (and honestly, so do I).

This new colour combination felt too good to use just once, so we expanded it across three clothing styles and then carried it into sleepwear too, with a matching nightie and gown.

As always, we’ve also worked with our fabric remnants — something that’s really important to us as a small, sustainable brand.

From these, we’ve created a collection of bags and wash bags, perfect for summer travels.

Small pieces, but full of the same story all coming very soon…

This collection has been such a joy to create — quieter, more considered, but still full of that unmistakable Dilli Grey spirit.

And it’s all launching very soon.

I can’t wait to share it with you.

Best wishes
