Style guide: Tips on how to layer for winter

'I can't wear cotton in winter, I get too cold' - 'it feels too summery' - 'I don't know how to layer without looking bulky'... these are just some of the reservations we hear about how to dress when the weather cools but as a 'seasonless' brand we're passionate about showing customers in store how they can layer and style their Dilli Grey dresses all year round with some clever wardrobe staples. This autumn we have lined all our dresses, or added slips for extra coverage, but even if you're looking to eek out the wear of your favourite summerm buys, it's about adapting how you wear your wardrobe through the seasons to get the absolute best wear out of each piece you own... here are 5 tips on how to layer for style and warmth this winter...

Look for light-weight layers in contrasting textures

The great thing about wearing 1-2 thinner layers is that you can add or remove them throughout the day... going from a cold walk into a warm house you can easily adapt your outfit. Our quilted jackets are a great 'mid layer' option instead of a cardigan; throw on over jeans and a tee around the house, or add under a classic camel or navy wool overcoat for a flash of colour and print (and added warmth!)

Add structure (and warmth!)

A classic velvet or cord blazer is a great staple to have in your wardrobe to smarten up one of our hand-block print boho dresses. It gives your silhouette structure and paired with boots and tights is a beautiful, romantic autumn look. There are plenty of great vintage options out there, or invest in one from an independent brand, safe in the knowledge it won't date.

Instant cosy factor

This season, knitted vests are everywhere. Look for one made from natural fibres in a neutral tone and throw it over all your summer dresses, or shirts and jeans for an instant cosy layer. In Italy they're called 'scalda cuore' - literally 'heart warmers'; it's about keeping your core warm and then showing your fashion colours with statement sleeves.

Under cover
Another easy way of styling up your cotton dresses for autumn is by layering over a skinny ribbed polo neck. Buy a handful in a range of neutrals, or try picking out a colour from a print to tie a look together. Opt for merino wool for warmth without bulk, or sustainably sourced cashmere for a luxe investment.

Finally...

A lot of customers worry about looking bulky when they layer - a final tip would be to invest in a couple of good belts to cinch in your layers. Over blazers, chunky knits, dresses... they bring the focus to the narrowest part of your waist for a flattering silhouette.

Our biggest tip is to have fun - use pieces you already have in your wardrobe and give it a go! If you're looking for more inspiration follow us on Instagram @dilli_grey for IGTV Styling videos and more ideas on how to create a seasonless wardrobe.
